报告摘要:

Fossil Woods In North America's National Parks and Monuments

Truly ancient woods, fossil woods millions of years old, occur on all continents.  Some are admired and collected for their beauty, a practice that has at times been at odds with their conservation and a concern as it affects their availability for research into ancient environments and climate change.  In North America, some of the most spectacular fossil wood localities are conserved in National Monuments and National and State Parks where they are tourist attractions and intrigue visitors by the views they provide of ancient worlds. Some of the legends about the formation of fossil wood, and its uses by Native Americans and other ancient peoples are referenced. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, with its tiers of 50 million year fossil forests and the Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, USA, with its 200 million year old prone logs are featured in this talk.  They are compared to some fossil forests of other continents, including the Geoparks of China and Europe. Some fossil wood localities are spectacular because of their scenic locations, some are spectacular for the abundance and sizes of the fossil logs they have.  All are valuable for encouraging the general public to appreciate and protect fossil forests that provide direct evidence of long ago worlds. And all have potential for benefiting local communities by providing tourist revenue.
