报告摘要:The value of naturally durable wood materials and wood protection are neither confined to the last century nor to present technologically advanced wood processing industries around the globe. Some fine examples are illustrated in the appreciation for naturally durable wood materials and cultural artifacts, the utilization of treated wood by superficial protection with natural plant-based “preservatives” (mainly various plant oils) to stabilize wood moisture and/or control wood biodeterioration, since ancient and medieval history until the end of the 19th century. These historical accounts of wood durability/treatment certainly attest to mankind’s long cultural use of durable wood materials, with interest to conserve wood either for aesthetics or for prolonged beneficial utilization to society. Indeed mankind will perceivably maintain the age-old tradition of favouring durable woods or treated woods, albeit with modern technology, in the new millennium even though faced with the present strict environmental and human health controls in wood protection, challenging the industry to develop environmentally preferred wood protecting biocides or non-biocides to suit an environmentally conscious global society.
