Introduction of Wood Culture in Japan

Abstract
The land area of 70% in our country is covered by mountain. Our peninsula is narrow but elongated from south to north, covering sub-tropical and sub-frigid zones. A variety of wood species is available and has been used not only temples and shrines but also folk’s house, utensils, ritual implements and so on. The techniques have been succeeded by the traditional wood workers.
On this occasion of “World Wood Day”, I would like to introduce how those wood workers design and produce beautiful wooden artifacts from the points of techniques and qualities of wood. The presentation will introduce the following topics as well briefly:
1. Climate and Forest environment in our land
2. Traditional way to live in wooden house
3. Traditional wooden building such as temple and schrine
4. Wooden Buddhist sculpture
5. National treasure of wooden objects in Shoso-in temple
6. Traditional wood works
7. Modern wooden houses

Speaker Profile
Takao Itoh, Professor Emeritus of Kyoto University, is also the visiting researcher at Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties since 2006. He received his Master’s degree in agriculture from Kyoto University in 1968, and started his teaching career as the Assistant Professor of Wood Research Institute at Kyoto University from 1968 till 1990. He had visited University of North Carolina, USA during 1981-1982 and University of Texas, Austin Texas during 1982-1983 as visiting researcher. In 2004 he became professor of Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere, Kyoto University, and then retired from the Kyoto University in 2006. His professional research area includes: wood anatomy, wood formation, and wood culture. He has published over 200 papers including Originals, Books, Reviews and Reports.
