Abstract: Japanese cedar is an endemic species and only domestic species among Taxodiaceae in Japan. It is distributed widely in Japan peninsula except Hokkaido district and the most abundantly planted tree species for the commercial purposes in Japan at present. Recently, we have published a database of wood species used for archaeological wood excavated in Japan(Itoh et al., 2012). According to the database, the most frequently used wood was Japanese cedar, followed by Castanea crenata (2nd), Quercus sp., Sect. Prinus (3rd.), Chamaecyparis obtusa(4th), Quercus sp. Sect. Cerris (5th), Fraxinus spp. (6th), Quercus sp. subgen. Cyclobalanopsis (7th), Abies spp.( 8th), Aesculus turbinata (9th), and Zelkova serrata (10th). Therefore, Japanese cedar is the most useful tree in the history of Japan. On this occasion, utilization of Japanese cedar for the other wooden cultural properties such as Buddhist sculptures, temple and folk houses will be presented.
