Abstract: During the study and the preservation-restoration of a sculpture of Japanese origine, we proceeded to an analysis of the support to clear up the numerous questions which aroused this work. Made of painted wood, this statue could embody a Shintoist divinity being a member of the category of Myoijin. It is a heiress of techniques  "Yosegi zukuri" and "Gyokugan", developed since the period Heian. This work was made at the beginning of period Edo; when the aestheticism in the craft production was prosperous and during the historic context ofseizure of power by Tokugawa’s and the politics of closure of the Japanese country. The oldest  polychromy is at present covered with “surpeint” but the numerous gaps of polychromy could allow an analysis of the wood according to the archaeodendrometrical methods respecting the integrity of the work. The examination was to define the homogeneity of this set consisted of numerous wooden fragments, to determine the species, to specify the dating and the origin of the woods and to interpret the results.

The wood anatomy shows that two trees seem to have been used: Cryptomeria japonica (Sugi) and Chamaecyparis obtusa  (Hinoki). The dendro-chronological measurements made on the elements of Hinoki indicate that fragments were extracted from the same tree, probably of more than 3 centuries and the most recent and preserved tree rings take place at the beginning of the XVIth century. But for diverse reasons which we shall explain, the date of cutting down took place from the end of the XVIth century that is to say the initial phase of Edo period. The forest origin of wood is biogeographically similar to chronologies established for the region of Nagano, Japan. This current study, led jointly between France and Japan, will continue by additional xylometrical studies to pull the maximum of information.

Dr. ASENSI AMOROS, Maria Victoria,  Egyptologist and wood anatomist, works with International Museums and Archaeological teams in order to identify wood artist artifacts’ made by different civilizations. At the moment she is involved in archaeological programs in Egypt (identifications of woods came from the first Arab installation in Cairo or some excavations from pharaonic and byzantine Period), in France with the Louvre Museum or the Quai Branly Museum (African an Oceanian Objects) as an example, or with the Vatican Museums in Italy.

Actually she is based in Paris (France) as a scientific director of a company involved in wood anatomy identifications (Xylodata) and she is a officeholder of a IUFRO Organization (5.10.01, Wood Culture). She is the author of numerous publications in Egyptian and African artifacts and a co-director in several PhD thesis in archaeological wood.
