摘要:To uphold the art and legacy of wood carvings in Malaysia in particular and the world in general, it would require experts to help these carvers to sustain. This goal can only be achieved with systematic teaching and proper learning process. NOSS aims to produce well rounded wood carvers that are able to preserve the local wood carving industry. According to Association of Malaysian Carving Artists (PENGUKIR), there are more than 950 registered members in Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (Sarawak and Sabah). The objectives for the establishment of NOSS are to enable wood carvers to obtain recognised certified skills at national level, prepare workforce that have intellectual and practical skills, to change public perception towards local wood carvers, produce quality wood carvings that meets the standard requirements, to ensure the price of wood carvings produced is at par with the artistic value as well as the level of skill provided. The level of skill acquired by these carvers can be classified into level 4 and 5 (carving management) that would enable these carvers to engage in engraving and entrepreneurship activities. While the novices classified under level 2 and 3, would need to apprentice under the experts to further acquire further knowledge and skill. Ultimately, it is intended that NOSS would be a centre of reference towards production of skill carvers that gives due consideration to the environment.
