摘要:When the twin natural calamities (earthquake and Yolanda) hit the country in 2013, the country became aware of the loss in cultural heritage that these natural calamities have brought. Agencies tasked to protect the heritage resources convened towards the creation of the Philippine Charter for the proper conservation of the country’s cultural heritage. Among these agencies was Escuela Taller which is now a foundation to train out of school youths in conserving built heritage using traditional techniques. Some of the consultants commissioned by Escuela Taller are also academics from the Department of Forest Products and Paper Products from the College of Forestry and Natural Resources in University of the Philippines Los Baños (DFPPS, CFNR, UPLB).

There is already an awareness to understand the nature of materials for proper conservation such that for wooden structures, experts from DFPPS, CFNR, UPLB are being tapped by Escuela Taller for this purpose. The main objective of the team was to identify the wood species used in the construction of such structure. In 2013 and 2016, the team worked on the identification of the wooden door components of the 400 year old Our Lady of Remedies Parish Church in Malate, Manila. In 2015 to 2016, the same team documented and identified the wooden components of the 400 year-old choir loft chairs of the San Agustin Church in Intramuros, Manila and the nearly century-old retablo or the Virgin Altar of the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag in Manaoag, Pangasinan. On the same period, the World Bank sponsored a study to assess the multi-hazard vulnerability of various structures in Bohol and Cebu and a team from the same department was tapped to identify the wood species in the truss. The data was used in the wind hazard vulnerability of the structures. Most species identified are those belonging to the premium and indigenous species category in the Philippines. Some of these species are Narra (Pterocarpus indicus Willd. Forma indicus), Tindalo (Afzelia rhomboidea (Blanco) Vidal), Ipil (Intsia bijuga (Colebr.) O. Kuntze) and Yakal (Shorea astylosa Foxw.) All the information gathered served as benchmark data of such structures and as reference for the species to be used for the replacement of the damaged components which is essential in the conservation process.
